Managed vs Self-Hosted AI Agents
By AgentHostCompare Editors · Published 2026-10-20
AI agent hosting comes in three main shapes. They aren’t priced the same way, and they don’t hand you the same responsibilities, so comparing them on monthly price alone gives a misleading answer.
The three hosting types
| Fully managed | One-click VPS | Self-managed VPS | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who installs the agent | Provider | You, from a template | You |
| Root access | Usually no | Yes | Yes |
| OS and security updates | Provider | You | You |
| Backups | Usually included | Often extra | You set them up |
| Run other software | No | Yes | Yes |
| Linux knowledge needed | None | Basic | Moderate |
Fully managed services, such as Hostinger Managed Hermes or n8n Cloud, run one specific application for you. You configure it in a dashboard.
One-click VPS plans give you a full virtual server, sometimes with an application template preinstalled. After installation, it’s your server to maintain.
Self-managed VPS plans, like a DigitalOcean Droplet, are blank Linux machines.
What the price leaves out
- AI model usage. Most plans don’t include model costs. You pay your model provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others) per use. Some managed plans include a bundle of credits. Check what happens when they run out.
- Renewal pricing. Promotional VPS prices often require prepaying 12–24 months and renew at a much higher rate. Our price table shows both rates.
- Backups. Often a paid add-on on VPS plans.
- Your time. A VPS needs updates, monitoring and the occasional fix. If an hour of your time is worth $30 and maintenance takes one hour a month, a $6 VPS really costs about $36 a month. The cost calculator has a maintenance field for this.
Which should you choose?
Choose fully managed if:
- you’ve never used SSH, or don’t want to
- you only need one agent
- you want backups and updates handled for you
Choose a VPS if:
- you want to run several agents or services on one server
- you need root access, custom packages or your own model setup
- you’re comfortable keeping a Linux server patched
Subscriptions vs API billing
Don’t assume a personal chat subscription (for example a ChatGPT or Claude plan) can power an agent on a third-party host. Agents usually need an API key billed per use, and each model provider sets its own terms for third-party use. Check those terms before you estimate costs.
