Intro Price vs Renewal: The Real Cost of AI Agent Hosting

The headline monthly price on a hosting page is rarely what you pay each month. Three things change the real cost: prepaid terms, renewal prices and AI model usage.
Prepaid terms
Many VPS plans advertise a low monthly rate that only applies when you pay for a long term upfront. For example, Hostinger’s KVM 1 page lists $6.49/mo and states that all plans are paid upfront. Over a 24-month term, that’s about $155.76 due on day one.
Monthly-billed plans, like DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplets, charge the same amount every month. There’s no large first payment, and you can cancel at any time.
Renewal prices
When the intro term ends, the plan renews at its regular price. Using the figures from Hostinger’s page, KVM 1 renews at $11.99/mo for a 2-year term, almost double the intro rate. Over 36 months:

The plans differ in RAM and other features, so this table isn’t a recommendation. It shows that the cheapest-looking intro price isn’t always cheapest over time. Note also that renewing for another 2-year term means paying the full renewal amount upfront again.

AI model usage
Hosting runs the agent. The intelligence comes from a model API, billed separately by tokens used. For a personal assistant with light use, model costs can be a few dollars a month. For automations that run constantly, they can easily exceed the hosting bill. Set a spending limit at your model provider and start with a conservative estimate.
